Etrian Odyssey- Really fun dungeon-crawling game I'm into right now. Battle system's textbook traditional: You roll the dice; you kill the mice. However, a few factors keep this from being brainless, one being the class system; you can create and customize your entire party(5 at a time, 20 slots in all, with a few new classes being acquirable mid-game). Each have about 25 skills that you can train though skill points(the more powerful ones require training of other skills in order to unlock), so it creates enough complexity to serve as components for formulating a strategy, which you will need to do because this game is notably hard.
But really, the game's defining feature is the use of cartography as a game element. As you move through the labyrinth, you have to draw walls and create landmarks(and by "have to", I mean the game is essentially unplayable if you don't). It could be deeper, but it's enough to impress me.
Then there are some other neat quirks like item deposits and unlocking goods in the shop by selling materials to the smithy and yadda-yadda.
I haven't played any of the sequels, but I hear they're way better, which is something to be said since the first is still damn solid. Since you don't have a 3DS you can't get the remake, so I'd say to start with the second since it has more of everything from classes to dialogue.
Dragon Quest III through IX- What I like about this series is that it never tries to be anything new; just really, really good. If you're wanting something that breaks the mold stay away from this.
III(SNES)- Probably not this, but I still liked the class system, the personality system and the music. Pretty bare-bones, though.
V- The story, for the time and medium, is really impressive. There are some really emotional, memorable scenes that'll stick with you even if the story overall just doesn't work the way it should. Gameplay's alright; sort of a monster-collecting system.
VIII- Overrated, but a pretty damn long, satisfying game nonetheless. I'm not kidding on the length, either, this took me 85 hours to complete. Music's amazing, world's big and fun to explore, and his has some pretty nifty VC, too.
IX- Honestly based around grinding, but the way it goes about it makes it more than acceptable(For a while). It's all fun.
Persona 3- Unique game. Friendship/dating sim and dungeon crawler(Atlus fucks those in the ass a bit)
Poke'mon- Hey, pretty much like going out to collect over 700 different part members. Play with others to incorporate strategy. I'd say go get the new one when you get a chance.
Paladin's Quest- Everyone hates this for no reason. Snes game with a lot of unique elements and cool visual style.
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 1-3- Action RPG with random encounters. Crafting your own weapon is pretty tight. Simple and intuitive: VERY easy to get into.
I've at least tried over 1000 different RPGs in my life but I'm too tired to remember any more.
